460 Rowland Guns Now Available!!
I invented the 460 Rowland cartridge in the late 1990’s and developed modifications for the legendary 1911 pistol to handle it safely. I was mentored by the late Jim Clark, Sr., who was a great friend and outstanding pistolsmith. My goal was to create a relatively compact pistol which would have the power of a .44 Magnum revolver, but that would still be managable with reasonable recoil and noise. Our 460 Rowland guns and ammunition have gone on to far exceed my original expectations and have established a new benchmark for performance handguns.
We start with a superior 1911, chambered in .45 ACP, and change out the stock barrel to one specially modified to accept the 460 Rowland cartridge, then we alter the spring system, and add a “compensator” to the muzzle of the gun. Since my 460 Rowland shell is essentially a true .45 caliber magnum package, but with the same overall length of the .45 ACP, common 45 auto magazines and accessories function well. The external difference in my 460 Rowland and the .45 ACP is that the 460 Rowland brass casing is 1/16 inch longer than the .45 ACP case while retaining an identical loaded overall length. This important safety feature prevents someone from chambering a 460 Rowland shell in an unmodified .45 ACP firearm. The velocity difference between the two shells is huge: 1575 feet per second for my 460 Rowland bullets, vs 800 to 900 feet per second for the standard .45 ACP projectile. Energy is vastly improved as well with my 460 Rowland producing over 1000 foot pounds of muzzle energy per shot vs around 350 foot pounds of energy for the regular .45 ACP. Also, a .45 ACP can be fired in the 460 Rowland barrel if need be; sort of like shooting a .38 Special shell in a revolver chambered in .357 Magnum. Or, the original .45 ACP barrel, which came with the pistol, can be easily and quickly replaced in the gun if the shooter wants to shoot inexpensive .45 ACP ammo. A number of companies manufacture 460 Rowland ammunition and reloading information is widespread for it as well.
Our Johnny Rowland Custom 460 Rowland is based on the excellent Springfiield Armory 1911 and offers exceptional-some would say amazing-performance and accuracy. Each gun/460 Rowland conversion combination is blueprinted; then tested for accuracy and function and shipped with a signed target. Our logo is engraved on the slide along with our own series serial number. Only $1499 and the pistol comes accompanied with the original .45 ACP barrel and spring. Additional magazines and other accessories are available for extra purchase. (email or call us to see if a particular 1911 qualifies for conversion unit)
